Kevin
was born in Skipton and brought up in Barnoldswick and attended
West Craven High School where he played in the school band under
Barry Davidson and head of Music Kathleen Astin.
He started playing the piano aged 5 and trumpet aged 12 under his
tutor Arthur Butterworth.
Over the years between 1962 and 1968 he played with Earby Prize
Brass. At 16 years of age, Kevin enlisted into the Coldstream Guards
under the Director of Music Trevor Sharp. With them he was involved
in national and international Royal and State engagements including
the trumpet fanfare at the Investiture of Prince Charles as Prince
of Wales.
In tours and events undertaken by the band he performed regularly
on the cornet, trumpet, piano and double bass. Kevin received a
Queens commendation for solo piano performances at the Investiture
Ceremonies at Buckingham Palace and won the coveted Cousins
Memorial Silver Medal whilst at the Royal Military School of Music,
Kneller Hall.
He then graduated from the Royal Academy of Music and University
of London gaining several prizes and diplomas. He was awarded a
Trinity College of Music Fellowship in trumpet playing and RAM Club
Prize. He has played piano and trumpet solos in Radio Orchestral
Concerts and has performed on television.
He recorded the Dads Army signature tune.
