I would infact argue it greatly expands one's writing capabilities hugely. A good knowledge of theory and composition will also help one realise there is a million and one different ways of playing a single chord pattern/how to make guitar solos/how to improvise and so much more. I play 7 instruments and with this many different instruments I have quite a unique perspective and insight into this subject.
