Red Admiral Records LLP
2008 - Congratulations to our friends Red Admiral Records who have incorporated at last. The company will take under it's wing the Red Admiral Records Label, Cringe Music (publishing), Kent & E Sussex Gig Guide and its other idents www.kentgigs.com, Kent Musicians Web and Kent MusicBiz.
First established in 1979 Red Admiral has supported Kent artists and songwriters, initially launching the international career of Arthur Kay and the Originals.
Latest release on CD is the classic rock album Mirkwood by Dover band Mirkwood Their 1973 collectors album has not been available on CD before. Downloads first available worldwide late June 2008.
The label released albums by the Rhythm Of Blues, The Sharpee's and recorded pop idol's Rik Waller's second album as all of the musicians were Kent based.
2005 non-Kent artists were added to the roster as the company became involved as a worldwide digital distributor including Hardly Mozart, Carmen Wiltshire and ZOO.
2007 Red Admiral signed international swing singer Peter DInsley, launched the Keith Harwood Memorial Album and created album deals with The Silent Kingdom and Belgian Folk/Classical composer Wim Hautekeit.
2008?? Day to day management of the new company is the responsibility of Chris and Sandi Ashman.
Chris said,
"It will take a little while to establish our absolute direction for 2008 as we shuffle the cards in hand, there are wildcards and jokers in every pack. We have never seen the music and leisure business so disorientated as it is now. Many of our associates are saying that the smoking ban has killed the pubs and music scene and in some sectors I agree there are going to be tears. But once the weak businesses have closed the strong ones will become stronger. I think we are going to see some great new venues rise from the ashes.
In the recorded music part of our business, it has been tough globally with CD sales still dropping and downloaded music on the increase but we are feeling confident that we will be around a few years yet. One thing that's for sure is, we have some wonderful writers and performers working out there and we are signing more as we speak, the next album is only weeks away. We will just create the various products in different proportions to match our market whether it be CD's or chips for home or mobile use or supplying music to the 100's of download sites as we do now.

I think we will probably see products produced on the fly as clients order them rather than risking the over production scenario that exists now.

There will always be a demand for physical forms of music such as live performances by musicians. Kent has always had a very lively music scene and this will not change. But, it will without doubt be different and challenging. There are signs that musicians are not going to be put down by the difficulty of holding it together. One of our most visited pages on www.kentgigs.com is 'Musicians Wanted'.

Rhythm of Blues - "Unsung Heroes" Release!

Unsung Heroes will shortly be available from www.eastcentralone.com We are exceptionally pleased to once again be involved with the team at East Central One having worked with them in another life many moons ago. As you will see from the site, this is a quality company run by successful people who have been responsible for some of the best in the business for a long time. Thanks guys! Also, from this company, watch out for Messenger ...... you will be hearing more from them.

Wye Blues
Believe me........if this all works as it is looking to, then this is going to be one hell of a show! Dial into the Wye Blues site www.wyeblues.co.uk for up the minute details. Could be some very interesting headline acts here!!

Jon Strong
Jon has, for a long time, been a fave of ours, is currently singing some vocals for "Unsung Heroes" and is a most talented guy, take a look at this...

as a solo performer has toured with Ry Cooder, Van Morrison, Robert Palmer, Talk Talk, Danny Thompson, Clannad, Has done numerous major festivals including Cambridge, Cropredy, San Bernardino Folk Festival. His band have toured consistently over the passed 11 years throughout the UK and Europe building a loyal fan base and achieving much critical acclaim as one of the tightest three piece bands on the scene and instigating comments like...

The Tower Arts Centre Winchester “No apologies! The return of one of the
best bands in the UK this time packing the long awaited CD Honest Soldier.
Top quality music played with total conviction”.

Bob Harris Radio 1 “Brilliant”

Johnny Walker Radio 1 live session “I don't believe you were playing live”

Tower Arts Centre Winchester “Kill to get tickets”

Fibbers York “Mind blowing acoustic guitar work.

Oxford Curfew “Highly evocative slabs of industrial folk rock.

After 11 years with the band Jon is now back to the roots of it all, playing solo.

Irish Centre Leeds review
“Jon Strong a living version of the real local blues that every poor neighbourhood generates.
Jon is a phenomenally good guitar player, with blues and R&B mixed in with much more English ideas from the likes of Martin Carthy and Nic Jones, producing a unique booming and ringing three handed style all of his own. His bitter-sweet songs steal the show from the funky covers of Jim Croce and Lowell George that he also does. His mordant wit cracks up the audience and reminds us bluntly of tonight's legends and ghosts theme. “Jim Croce has gone …
” Exactly timed pause … “Des O’Connor’s still with us.” And straight on with the song. Death, despair and fear of flying, all conquered through music and some tablets”.

Tom Robinson review Honest Soldier CD
“If this came out with the name Peter Gabriel on the cover you can bet it would be hailed as a major artistic renaissance for a world class songwriter. If it came out with an unknown band name and a picture of a bunch of distrait-looking youths from Bristol on the sleeve, it'd probably win the Mercury Prize. Listening to music as good as this on an Own Label CD-R makes me want to weep with frustration at sheer idiocy of the business we're in”. Tom Robinson

If I can convince him......I do hope to see him on vocals at some shows!

Little Theatres
After the success of the little theatres shows, we are working on a tour of the little theatres in UK with Messenger and our old pal Jim Covington and Del Newman, the last show was 100% fun and we really hope we can do it again......

Thats it for now folks, keep up with www.myspace.com/rhythmofblues for dates and

GIG REPORT ; An Evening with Paul Dunton & guests wed 30th August, The Grey Lady, Pantiles

Terry Daniels opened the show this week marking his debut at the showcase in fine style. His diverse melodic style was warmly appreciated by the audience. Vocally reminiscent of ‘Paul Weller’, Terry’s resonant tones delivered healthy contrast and subtlety. ‘One short Time’ is a gem of a song that has oodles of feeling and reflective lyrics. All in all a very solid debut, great tunes, great voice and intelligent craft on the guitar. His relaxed nature on stage suits his chilled acoustic rock/pop style, I might have detected a Neil Finn (crowded house) influence, however, Terry definitely has his own distinct style. He will be back soon folks! ......................................Paul Dunton

Rhythm Of Blues to open for Wishbone Ash 25th Nov
I can honestly say that as a CRS reviewer I've come across some superb roots acts: Jay Hooks, Jayhawks, Tim McGraw, Walter Trout, Carl Verheyen, Alison O'Donnell and Isabel Ni Chuireain, Ashley Hutchings, Mavis Staples and Monica Queen to name but a few.
There have been some blinding roots gigs, too: lona, Miv Cameron Band, Walter Trout, Carl Verheyen and watch out for the return to the CRS stage of Rhythm Of Blues later this year.

Rhythm Of Blues - Alan Binclark RIP - Feb 2006
We are sad to hear of the death of our old friend Alan Bunclark this week. Alan drummed for many of Kent's popular bands from the 80's onwards including the Breakaways, Winston and The Churchills and the Rhythm Of Blues

Zebra3 - Ben Watson of OneKent, his band Miy Life In The Making and their association with Fizzgig is exciting as Fizzgig return to the UK in March to tour and release their new single "Sympathy" on March 18th. The Ohio based four piece are primed to follow the likes of Weezer and Fountains Of Wayne as the next American power pop sensation. UK music press and TV love them also. Watch out for tour schedule.

Kristie has released her new single on Somebodys Music Label

The Sharpee's - Pressure of Work causes band to re-form and introduction of World Class Musicians.
Next major weekend dates at Brands Hatch World Superbikes - Kentagon Bar.

Gummy Babies Studio Album has been abandoned by Rojon Records due to a split in the band. All band members have gone their own way after arguments with management and indecision as to future direction. A shame but we are sure we will see these good musicians pop up in future bands.

Rik Waller's Mighty Soul Band debut album "Innocence" will be released on September 5th 2005 on Kent label Red Admiral Records - REDAD CDA547

We have invited "Waterhorse" to join us on this evening. Waterhorse are not just an ordinary band, we feel they have something new to offer the music world and hope they will be joining our stable (sic) soon.

Zebra 3 Records are proud to announce the Signing of London based act (no hope) Astronaut.

Zebra 3 Records are also pround to announce they will now be representing Undergroove's Cubic Space Division.

Did you know Joss Stone was born in Kent just like our Rik ?

Joss Stone was born Joscelyn Eve Stoker in Dover in Kent, in 1987.

She grew up listening to American R&B and soul music such as Aretha Franklin and developed a throaty style of singing like her idols. At 14, she appeared on Star for a Night on BBC Television singing Franklin's (You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman. She told MTV News "I kind of clicked into soul music more than anything else because of the vocals. You've got to have good vocals to sing soul music and I always I liked it ever since I was little."

In 2002, she decided to back her ability by flying out from Devon in England for an audition in New York City with S-Curve CEO Steve Greenberg. She secured a record deal with a soulful version of On the Radio by Donna Summer

She then flew to Miami to start work on the Soul Sessions. She worked with people with solid credentials in the Miami soul scene such as Betty Wright, Benny Latimore, Timmy Thomas and Little Beaver. As well, she worked with conremporary acts Angie Stone and the Roots.

The album consists of classic soul tracks by Wright, Franklin, Laura Lee and Bettye Swann. The first single Fell in Love with a Boy was a reworking of The White Stripes' song Fell in Love with a Girl.

Showcase

Well,What an excellent day, I'm knackered.

John and I want to thank all concerned with yesterday's Showcase. All acts were brilliant and made us feel very proud. Things went more soothly than we expectected due entitrely to the professionalism and co-operation of Kent's best bands.

We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did and that you found some new friends and aquantances to plan future projects together. There are rumours already.

John and I were a little cautious when we created One Kent a year ago but now know we were right. Hope you feel the same way as we move on into another year.

Our friend Mike Brill from Radio Caroline has taken some CD's and will be playing something on his Wednesday show on the web. Don't know what, we shall have to get on line to find out. - http://www.radiocaroline.co.uk/ Mike Brill Wednesday 19.00 - 21.00

Some news -

The Sharpee's are doing 2 nights at the World Superbike Championships at Brands Hatch with 130,000 people on site. Maybe they can sell one or two CD's to refresh our bank balance.

Alvin Cohen and his wife travelled from N. London leaving a family party. They left 25 friends to clear up his house, hope they left the kitchen sink, carpets and family jewels for them to return to.
Please don't turn into a ratty little teenager at your next birthday, we love you the way you are.

Rik Waller's Mighty Soul Band - Album now planned for release 5th September. Thanks for the help with Kristie's recording and the support given for her performance. Especially Uncle Terry.

The show was videoed at great expense. We hope that when we get the master tape that you are all smiling.

John Chris and Ben.

Classic Rock Society Magazine CD Review July/Aug 05

Rhythm of Blues Moving On
Red Admiral Records

So, have you ever been to a Carl Verheyen Band gig? You have, then you have seen this band. Andy "Randy California" Young plays guitar and sings a bit too, ably assisted up front by Mick Brett on bass and vocals. Essentially, as the band name suggests they play some blues, but it ain't that "dead dog in the gutter" stuff, this is polished blues/rock.
The sound is supplemented in fine style by some saxophone from Mike Parlett and when they get warmed up there is a Latin feel in there too, aka Santana. Rhythm of Blues is a fine band that deserves a wider audience, but such is the politics of
Pigeon-holing in music that attracting cold listeners is tough. If you're one of those cold types that might enjoy being warmed then check them out at www.sonicwaveltd.com -------------------------------------Martin Hudson

My Life In the Making - What the Press Say

Metal Hammer:
Catchy pop melodies sit alongside Pantera style growlings and experimental and delicate guitar work. My life in the making play big rocking tracks with the balls of much more experienced musicians. Confident and passionate, lets hope that 2005 is the year this UK lot finally get the break they deserve.

Gig at the Garage, London check out www.myspace.com/zebra3
Gig at Edwards No8, Birmingham check out www.myspace.com/zebra3

Album now also available @ Virgin megastore on-line

Total guitar:
'Passionate debut from the diverse Kent metallers... they are a quality band in the making'

Big Cheese:
4/5 'Powerful vocals combined with an impeccable rhythm section takes the songs to the next level, with complicated riffs finishing it off. This lot could go far, check them out now and say you were there first.'

Rock Sound:
7/10 'Anamnesis' and 'Six' are both memorably full of intricate melodies and 'F4AF' style tempo shifts. Fleshing out their sound with nods towards 'Tool' and 'Incubus', MLitM really prove themselves....they'll be huge.'

Classic Rock:
6/10 Strident melodic metal from new brit four-piece who cite influences including tool and fnm and whose punch has them boxing above their weight

Candy Factory Lines:
4/5 'Wonderful use of dynamics and tempo shifts create a real atmosphere and structure to each song. The prevailing sound is thoroughly enjoyable, passionate, intelligent metal.'

Rock 3 Radio:
4.5/5 'Swooping, Chopping riffs, bubbling power bass lines all urged on by powerful emo drenched vocals. 'Contemplating Concepts Of Forever' contains ten tracks of massive rock that will easily sit beside the deftones and tools of this world

Ewopunk.com:
4/5 'The music has everything, passion, aggression, sympathy, explosions, believe me these guys have everything that will make you want to listen again and again.'

Roomthirteen:
11/13 'Anamnesis' and 'Time On Our Side' are two tracks that elevate the band far beyond their peers: My life in the making have arrived, put up your hands

Rock Midgets:
4/5 'My Life In The Making's debut album Contemplating Concepts Of Forever is not the sound of a young, hard-up emerging UK act but that of a fully fledged, major label US rock giant.'

I Will Be Heard:
7/10 'In down-to-earth terms they merge a heavy chugging guitar, double bass drum sound in amongst rather more dynamic and intricate Tool-esque style guitars and together with a flush of magical melodies and sweet vocals, they have fashioned an incredibly appealing style. Showing awesome promise, this accomplished debut album should see the band make huge strides - they certainly deserve to.
